February 25, 2014 — Now-a-days everywhere you turn something is green, usually literally, and claiming to benefit the world in some way. With all the "Green-washing", mixed messaging, over-saturation, and confusion, a lot of consumers are tuning out. So what do we do about it? ...
Miami, FL, February 14, 2014 — In an effort to keep our finger on the pulse of the marine industry, Rob Brady and I battled alligator alley and Miami traffic to spend a day walking the 2014 Miami Boat show. My last trip was in 2007, so everything there was fresh to my eyes. As it’s a show full of high dollar big-boy toys, I bought a couple Powerball tickets on the way out of town. ...
December 18, 2013 — It takes a unique combination of aesthetics, functionality, value, ergonomics and quality to make a product that the consumer will view as good design. There is no standard formula to that equation and it is this variability to those attributes which make product design interesting. I suppose you can call it ‘industrial design Darwinism’ when products evolve over time to changing market conditions, trends and technology. In this evolution the proceeding attributes will always exist, but their individual influence on the final product has a dramatic influence on the result. ...
November 27, 2013 — As a former Executive Level Defense Acquisition leader, I spent years translating military capability requirements into rigid military standards for the development, manufacturing and eventual fielding of a system. The Department of Defense has a well-established system development process (DOD Instruction 5000.02, Operation of the Defense Acquisition System) that delineates how a military system, regardless of complexity, is to be developed. ...
November 13, 2013 — Innovation is difficult and design problems are complex. Therefore, as an efficient method of understanding and resolving design issues quickly, designers and engineers rely upon the physical exploration of a concept. ...
September 13, 2013 — Where is the next breakthrough product idea going to come from? All companies face this question, whether you are running a start-up and the success of your company is relying on the success of your first product or running an R&D department of a large, multinational medical device company. ...
What do you think is the most important skill to have in order to compete in the graphic design field? This is a question that everyone asks and I find it at times a difficult one to answer. The answer also changes depending on who I am talking to. I think that when I first graduated I would say it was the ability to take criticism of your work. While I still think that this is an extremely important thing, I would now say the most important ‘skill’ to have as a designer is the ability to work in a collaborative environment. ...
Sarasota, FL, February 18, 2011 — It’s almost impossible to truly know if you’ll enjoy a certain job or career until you try it, and an internship is the perfect way to “test the waters”. ...
Sarasota, FL, February 7, 2011 — How long have you been an industrial designer and what is your schooling background? I trained at the College for Creative Studies (CCS) in Detroit, graduating in 2003 with a BFA in industrial design. Growing up, I loved drawing and designing airplanes and spaceships, wanting to be an aerospace engineer. This was before I knew about industrial design. After a high school art class presentation for the CCS transportation program, I was hooked. I am now living the dream, designing cool new products and vehicles every day! ...
November 3, 2010 — Captivating potential customers is critical whether it’s on the tradeshow floor, a city road or even an airport runway. Seconds are all you can count on having for making the case for your product and a compelling graphics scheme adds “wow factor”, explains product benefits and distinguishes your product from its competition. But bringing eye-catching graphics to a product can be difficult, especially for large products like industrial equipment. Vinyl graphic wraps offer an adaptive, economical and effective marketplace solution regardless of budget or production timetable. ...
