ROBRADY has collaborated with a start-up company that includes an orthopedic doctor and physical therapist to develop a medical exercise device that can potentially help those with multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson s disease, and other conditions where balance impairments are common.
Additional medical benefits of BalanceGym may include increased lower-extremity muscle and bone strength (i.e. less frequency of lower back pain), decreased blood pressure, and a lower risk of heart disease. Given the tremendous physical and social benefits of group exercise, depression may also be decreased by those who attend BalanceGym classes.
An estimated 40 percent of the more than 30 million older adults in the United States have sustained serious injuries such as bone fracture and/or brain injury from a fall. To specifically help this demographic safely and efficiently reach their fitness goals, BalanceGym facilitates the execution of standing exercises and stretches shown by research to improve balance and thus attenuate fall frequency.
Because likely application environments for BalanceGym include hospitals and retirement homes where physical therapists and doctors could incorporate the device into independent, early rehabilitation for patients recovering from hip-, knee- or ankle-replacement surgeries ergonomics was an aspect of intense design development and review.
The ROBRADY design group was charged with the sensitive ergonomic requirements surrounding the user s immediate sense of support and security. Specifically designed ergonomic solutions include allowing hands to rest on rather than grip around the handrail during use and a convenient foot pedal to make necessary handrail height adjustments.
The ROBRADY mechanical team provided BalanceGym the sturdy, solid ability to encompass the range-of-motion combinations required for users of varying heights. Once that was accomplished, the remaining tubes were aesthetically derived: To brand the look, larger tubes and angled cuts were utilized to create a strong, recognizable presence. The logo design and bold color graphics appointed by ROBRADY further differentiate BalanceGym from its competition.
